How regularly has your puppy been wormed?
There are various intestinal parasites that can infect puppies, dogs, etc. These can include (for example):
- Tapeworm
- Whipworm
- Hookworm
- Roundworm
ALL of these are believed to also to be able to infect humans!
Having various dogs, and also four children, has been made us aware of the need to have various procedures etc in place to help protect our family.
Possibly one of the easiest and main 'defences' to use is good hygeine practices. Teach the kids of the need to always wash their hands etc after playing with a puppy or dog (and with water AND soap).
The kids also need to learn not to let puppies, dogs, etc lick them on the face etc. They should also be enouraged to wear shoes etc when oustide (eg to prevent infection from hookworm, by their larvae burrowing into the skin of humans from soil etc).
We also regularly treat the entire family for 'worms' (including the dogs). Various treatments are available, and we normally use what our Pharmacist recommends (ie to treat the family). For the dogs, there are also numerous treatments available, and we normally use an 'all-wormer' type treatment (ie treats for a number of different types of worms).
The local risks from the various types of intestinal parasites can vary significantly from location to location. And for this reason, it is a good idea to talk with your local Veterinarian about the types of worms to treat for, the types of treatment to use, and how regularly to treat.
And when getting a puppy, ENSURE that it has been properly wormed.
